It was a sad day back in 2021 when Kalmbach Media ceased producing new books and shuttered the Bead and Button shows as well as their magazines. The pandemic accelerated the trend to digital publications. But luckily for us, there are still beadwork designers who have forged ahead with their own self-published books, thus serving that void.
Many beadwork and other craft enthusiasts prefer books as they are often good reference tomes to have around. No internet needed either!
Pennsylvanian, Patricia Parker, of RoseBluBeads is an award winning designer whose previous book, Colorful Components was published in 2019. She has since written her second book, From the Flowering Fields : Creating 3D Flowers with Seed Beads. This self published book is available as a PDF and as a physical book. I received a PDF copy for review.
It is a beautifully produced book focusing on botanical elements - flowers, leaves and even some of a garden's denizens like dragonflies and caterpillars. What Patricia does is to teach readers how to construct many common garden favorites. She starts with basic stitch instructions and moves on to the detailed steps on how each flower, leaf or insect is formed.
The diagrams and instructions are clear. As you can see from the Contents pages, she indicates which bead stitches are used. Very helpful if you favor one stitch over another!
The author also includes many spectacular examples of her finished pieces. These show how individual components can be put together with gorgeous results. I have included 3 here at the end. The passion flowers and poppies in the last one are absolutely stunning! Check out Patricia's blog to see more of her work.
You can also get some of her design elements as tutorials in her Etsy, RoseBluBeads, but the book is better value as it contains so much more.
An absolute delight for gardeners, nature lovers and beaders alike!

This is so exciting. I love beaded flowers, but am not skilled at the French beaded kind and much prefer to work with needle and thread. It was a delight skimming through the table of contents, and the sample pages make me want to skip all of my meetings today and get started. I hope I win, but just in case, I am saving my pennies.
ReplyDeleteDiana - Just so you know, this book is on beadweaving not the French beaded kind!
DeleteWow, if there was anything I'd like to win more I don't know what it is! Fantastic prize!
ReplyDeleteThis book looks amazing! I have been making flower pins as a fundraiser for Ukraine & would love to expand my repertoire of blossoms.
ReplyDeleteStunning! If the rest of the book is as gorgeous as what you've excerpted (& I have no doubt it is!) it must be fabulous!
ReplyDeleteOooh, I would love to win this! tpatterson1961@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteLooks like a gorgeous and must have book!
Lovely designs! what's not to love ... flowers that don't die!
ReplyDeleteOh, this looks awesome!! I absolutely love beaded flowers, but have had little success as I am not a fan of wired ones...will definitely be adding this to my wishlist! Really glad to see a .pdf copy as well.
ReplyDeleteI love books and I normally will buy a book if I decide I want to learn a new form of beading or any kind of new craft. My favorite job would have been working in a library. But it would have also been the job that I would never leave to go home. If I am planning on buying a book at a local book store I plan an entire day to buy that book. Because I will spend the whole day in the book store looking at all the books. And God knows I will leave that store with more than one book!!! I also own a lot of PDF books. I have all of them stored on a portable hard drive. It is the safest way to own this type of book. I would love a copy of this book. I have never made flowers out of seed beads but it looks really beautiful. So I think it is a type of beading I would definitely try!
ReplyDeletethank you, Patricia for this chance. Love the way the table of contents is divided by technique. Thank you, Pearl for introducing me to a new designer to me. I am a blog, newsletter, and Facebook follower. email is auravisionrose@peoplepc.com Good luck everyone.

Patricia’s flower necklaces are so pretty. I would love to make a similar one. I think that looking at what you have shown of her book that it would be so much fun to make her flowers and have a very unique necklace of my own for the summer. a.p.brad@rogers.com
ReplyDeleteWOW! Absolutely love these beautiful beaded creations! I started making some sunflowers recently (thinking and praying for those in Ukraine as I do) and I would love to create more different kinds of flora - and the caterpillar and dragonfly too - with your instructions. I subscribe to Pearl Blay's Blog and am so glad she has featured your creations!
ReplyDeleteA perfect book for this time of year. It would be so much fun to learn to make such a large variety of flowers. Thank you Pearl for offering this wonderful giveaway.
