Do you sometimes wonder how much handmade goes into making handmade jewelry? I do. The term handmade really goes a long way when as many of the components used are indeed handmade. Like hand forged ear wires and clasps.
Well, French ceramic artist, M-laure Desage of Atelierementerre, definitely makes just the kind of handmade components jewelry makers will appreciate.
She has more than 3 decades of experience. She specializes in one of a kind raku beads. This is a traditional Japanese pottery technique where different types of organic material is introduced into the clay firing process to produce unique patterns (see video below). The rich colors and the delicate veining makes her beads beautiful and rich.
She also produces dainty porcelain beads often in cream and other light colours. I have included one of her earrings below which shows her modern design esthetic.

I've done Raku with my brother a number of times and it's always exciting and a bit scary each time. Since we've always done bigger objects like vases etc the chance of dropping the piece moving it from the fire to the smothering pot is nerve wracking! Then waiting for the reveal is so much fun!
ReplyDeleteDoing Raku beads would be very labour intensive but her results are spectacular!!
Very nice!! I love the colors and patterns of the traditional raku beads. Those delicate little porcelain beads are amazing too; they look like they have a very fine texture.
