There are a number of recycled credit card jewelry designs out there but Kristal Romano's are "gems"! This New Jersey based metalsmith creates what are tiny wearable sculptures mixing metal with sections of discarded credit cards mounted like faceted gemstones.
Just as many merchants offer different credit card services, Kristal's credit card "gem" jewelry covers the usual suspects - Visa, Mastercard and American Express!
Her designs are due to her interest "in cultural notions of value and the use of commodities."
She clearly has a sense of humor and hence her playful designs. Kristal believes, "Levity allows viewers to enter my work on one level, but with more time spent additional layers of meaning unfold to facilitate a deeper understanding."
Kristal holds a Master of Fine Art degree from Montclair State University.
