I've covered wire and polymer clay jewelry tutorials before (see links below). Rather than ordinary round wire, you could also use flat wire. Flat wire is just a long strip of wire in different widths.  A couple of polymer clay designer shows how you can use flat wire to form frames which are then used to cut out the clay. Regular wire, beads and so on are used to embellish the creations.

My favorite is Mo Clay's flat wire and polymer clay owl pendant tutorial! But remember you do not have to make animal shapes!  This technique is great for all kinds of designs.  You could adapt the technique for heart pendants as featured in this past post.

Trouble finding a source for flat wire?  Try here of here or if you are into precious metals, try Rio Grande.

I also like her flat wire and polymer clay cat pendant tutorial seeing that I am the slave of 3 cats at home!

Then there is the flat wire and polymer clay butterfly pendant tutorial.

Another polymer clay artist, Archidee, also used flat wire for her bird polymer clay pendant tutorial.  It is a great way to use a collage of leftover canes.  Thanks Archidee for providing the English version.
