I have used faux leather before. I usually die cut them on my Cricut. The faux leather sheets come in some colors and textures. I can cut shapes and layer them but that is it. Actually creating your own faux leather material from polymer clay was possible but not straightforward (see last link below).

Staedtler recently came out with Fimo Leather Effect polymer clay.  Not only can you created colorful patterns and textures with ease, the resulting material can be used like real leather and definitely not limited to jewelry. You can punch holes in it.  Stamp on it. Bend it. Cut it. And even sew it!

Shown below are finished examples from Staedtler. Bookmarks, tassels, purses - the creative possibilities of polymer clay have suddenly expanded!  Staedtler also has an introductory video.

Ginger Davis Allman  of The Blue Bottle Tree experimented with it and wrote up a thorough review on this new polymer clay.   She covers both the pros and cons and includes many tips and tricks if you want to get into this material.

But at the end of her review she said didn't know where to get it in North America.  Easy answer to that! Amazon!  Staedtler sells the typical sized packages in many different colors - black, berry (hot pink), nut (brown), rust, dove grey, olive ochre , lagoon (blue-green) , indigo, ivory  and saffron yellow.

The manufacturer also sells a sampler with 12 assorted colors:
