Polymer clay jewelry designers use the slab technique to create designs where they are able to cut out different patterns.  Just watch Texas based Janani, the polymer clay artist behind Fern&MitchHandmade on Youtube, build up her sunflower slab in this tutorial. 

The design on the pale grey slab background allows her to cut out her earrings such that each earring is not a match to the other.  This gives it such an individual look to the pair. 

She also has simple tips on how to blend orange and yellow for the petals.
