Everyone loves stories and there no more convoluted and fascinating than those the Ancient Greeks told. There was no internet for entertainment back then!  Why they have endured to today are the universally appealing tales of good and evil, love and betrayal and heroic deeds against impossible odds. Also when the powerful Greek gods misbehave and they often misbehaved badly, these stories become particularly riveting. Perhaps it is much like how we like to read about the misdeeds of celebrities and royalty today!

Greek myths have influenced the arts, books and culture over thousands of years. Many movies were inspired by them - like Hercules, Immortals, Troy, Wonder Woman and Clash of the Titans. Shown here are beautiful jewelry inspired by the same myths.

The 12 Labors of Hercules
Greek mythology is part of our cultural heritage - so many products take their names and images from Greek myths such their goddesses and warriors.  Pandora, the jewelry brand is named after the first human "all gifted" woman who opened the box, releasing all the evils of humanity. Venus (goddess of love and beauty)- is the name of a popular female razor product, the famous sporting brand Nike is named after the goddess of victory. NASA named their moon landing program after Apollo, the god who pulled the sun across the sky in his chariot. Amazon, the giant shopping site is named after the legendary warrior women. Midas, the automotive service center chain, is named after King Midas who turned everything he touched into gold. Ajax, the name of a cleaning product with the slogan "Stronger than Grease" is named after a legendary Greek warrior known for his strength.

Greek mythology is also full of convoluted and complicated family histories. Perhaps it's best to tackle one Greek god at a time! The Ancient Romans lived alongside Greek colonies on the Italian peninsula, so it was inevitable that they would share the same stories.

Hercules (Roman) or Heracles (Greek) was the demi-god known for his strength and his quest to become a god. Disney greatly sanitized and changed his story for the 1997 animation. The MythologyGuy1 explains the real story of Hercules vs the Disney version

We can forgive Disney because their animated version gave us a delightful cast of voice actors and lovely music by Alan Menken who also composed some of the best known Disney music from the 1990's. The inspirational "I Can Go the Distance" from their film is sung here by the One Voice Children's Choir
