Book Review and Giveaway : Modern Beaded Lace

Do you find beading to be either too time consuming or too intricate for everyday wear? You are not alone. Many beading enthusiasts will find this book appealing because of the modern styling. If not quite contemporary, the designs are certainly less ornate than some traditional beadwork designs. The design colors are also deliberately muted and neutral.

I received the book, Modern Beaded Lace: Beadweaving Techniques for Stunning Jewelry Designs, from Interweave for review.  It is by Cynthia Newcomer Daniel, a seasoned bead artist, instructor and blogger.  Her Jewelry Tales blog showcases not only her designs but accompanying short stories.

The basics section not only covers the types of beads used in the 18 jewelry projects but also the instructions for the stitches used - fringe, ladder, reinforced flat herringbone, reinforced tubular herringbone, triangular tubular herringbone, netting, peyote, right angle weave (RAW), modified  RAW, Russian snake stitch, square stitch, modified square stitch.

What surprised me was the designer's preference for Nymo B thread given the lacy and open designs. Many beaders would prefer to use Fireline for the stiffer support.  Cynthia likes the drape of the Nymo thread and crucially, she works with a very tight tension.

Hypnotize Me Earrings
Also delightful is the author's explanation of the different types of lace which inspired her designs. Needle lace is her favorite! She has clearly studied the knots used in lace making and could envision each knot being substituted with a bead!  Like the lace she loves, there is a lot of negative space in her pieces.

Dogwood Chain Necklace
Some of her most striking designs are towards the end of the book. The Heart Strings and Esha's Fan necklaces have gorgeous focals.

Lyra Bracelet
Jacobean Blossoms Earrings
Heart Strings Necklace
Esha's Fan Necklace
The book will be more difficult for absolute beginners but late beginners to intermediate beaders and beyond, should be able to tackle the projects. A good book to learn some new (to you) or modified versions of common beading stitches.
