Working with grooved cabochons certainly makes the wire working easier. The wire stays in the groove without having to struggle to hold things in place. You could use strips of masking tape to help but a groove is definitely a worthy alternative. Check out this easy tutorial by Liz Kreate who shows us how to make grooved cabochons without any fancy machines!
The trick is to use some small diamond files which comes in various shapes. Check your local hardware store or get it here.
I like her tip of making a temporary hot glue surface to prevent accidental scratches.
She also has a video on which gemstones to choose for grooving. You can use either natural stones or synthetic ones such as crystals.
