Want an easy way to add metallic depth to polymer clay so it looks like opal?  Check out this tutorial by Mo Clay. The "magic" ingredients are metallic foil, inks and embossing powder.

She first attaches the thin gold metallic foil to rolled out clay.  She adds hints of color using colored permanent markers and washes it out with some alcohol (use rubbing alcohol from the drugstore). The embossing powder is then added on top prior to baking.

She actually created her own two step alcohol inks!  That is clever.  You could also use prepared alcohol inks from Tim Holz Ranger collection or the Pinata line - both are good.

Another unusual approach is how she sandwiched the necklace chain between the polymer clay layers prior to final baking.
