There are many wonderful micro macrame jewelry designers out there. One of the best is Joan Babcock whose work I wrote about years ago.  To the best of my knowledge, this New Mexico artist is the only designer who combines wire with macrame. If you hop over to her website, you will see her superb and spectacular fibre and macrame works of art.

She has over 30 years of experience, not just as an artist but as an instructor. So lucky for those of us who want to learn more from this expert, Joan has several tutorials, books and an instructional DVD available on MicroMacrameMaven. Note that some of the single tutorials are in the books.

Joan says, "My primary materials include waxed linen and nylon cord, beads, wire, and metal. I use a variety of techniques including beadwork, soutache embroidery, wrapping, wirework, metalwork, and knotting (of course!)"

She often uses Cavandoli knotting to create her geometric and freeform patterns. "The Cavandoli style is done mainly in a single knot, the double half-hitch knot. Reverse half hitches are sometimes used to maintain balance when working left and right halves of a balanced piece."

In recent years, Joan has tackled Margaretenspitze fine knotting which was pioneered by a German crafter, Margarete Naumann (1881-1946). Joan said in her blog a few years ago how challenging and fascinating it is. Joan said, "It consists primarily of half hitches and double half hitches. The cords are carried along in bundles and dispersed into various patterns."  With her long experience, Joan has been able to create really complex designs.
