Supporting Ukrainian Artisans
Bead crochet differs from beadweaving in that a crochet hook is used to crochet thread which has been previously strung with beads.
It helps a lot if the patterns were already laid out especially if there are color changes. One bead artist who does this is Nina of NiLaJewelryStore. Most of her patterns are accompanied by videos which makes learning easier. Note : you do need to have intermediate crochet skills.
What I like about many of her patterns is the use of different kinds of beads. This one is gorgeous!
Nina also offers other types of bead crochet such as her adorable mushroom and pumpkin earrings.
Bead crochet jewelry is not super hard - you just need a little help with the start. I highly recommend StudioDax's jig which I reviewed before. Her tutorial shows you how to make the jig and crucially how to use it. My review shows how I made one and honestly, it's the only way I would start bead crochet and keep my sanity. I prefer to do bead crochet than to attempt peyote with a twist! But that is just my personal choice.
Note this jig has five loops so if you want to make any of Nina's patterns which are 7 seed beads in the round and need a jig, you will have to adapt the StudioDax instructions.

one of these days I'm going to learn bead crochet.... while I enjoy Pey-twist its sometimes stiffer than I'd like. I love the fluidity of Nina's pieces.
ReplyDeleteThe trick is to use the jig which I mentioned. Makes all the world of difference in the start. Then it gets easy to bead crochet.
Deletethanks for the tip!
