Natural pearls were once only exclusively worn by the very rich as they were rare in nature. But today, most of us can easily make and wear pearl jewelry.

Shown here are some lovely beaded pearl earrings tutorials. Most beaders prefer Swarvoski pearls for the uniformity. But these tutorials allow for placement of cultured pearls if desired.

Shown above is the beautiful Clelia design tutorial by Italian bead artist,  MaridaDesign

Below is the excellent design using natural pearls by Slovenian artisan, Svetlana of  CrystalLightStudio

The Girl with the Pearl Earring

Dutch painter, Johannes Vermeer (1632- 1675) is famous particularly for his paintings of middle class people indoors. One of his most famous has to be the Girl with the Pearl Earring. It's no surprise, the painting is sometimes called the Mona Lisa of the North.

The unknown subject does have an enigmatic smile. The pose is unusual in that the girl is half turned towards the artist. Her head gear is of unknown origin but it hints of something exotic from a far away land. And that large pearl, was it real?

Watch this short video by Art Deco about the artist, his famous painting and the likely origin of the pearl.
