Long time reader, Lorraine Gonda, clearly loves gemstone and originally suggested UniversalJewelry (now known as MaryamGemsCo) for my subsequent feature.

She tells me me the owner, Mohamed Sufiyan (Sufi) has opened yet another store, JohariGemJewels with an even great inventory (over 2500!) of well priced gemstones, wholesale lots, calibrated gemstones and my favourite of all - paired cabochons - for earrings! Shown above is a well named natural Arizona Sleeping Beauty turquoise cabochon.

 All the gemstones are shipped from Jaipur, India. Jaipur is a major gemstone and jewelry processing centre - many lapidarists and gemstone carvers are there.

Gemstones are now sourced from all over the world. But India has, for thousands of years of history, been a major source of gemstones. Sapphires came from the northern state of Kashmir. Once, the only diamonds came from the Golconda mines which are now depleted.

There are many gemstone and jewelry workshops in Jaipur.  Andy's Awesome Adventures, a travel channel, was lucky to be given a private behind the scenes tour of one of these which shows the artisans at work.
