Books and magazines are great sources of instruction and inspiration.  Especially the latter when you are suffering from a design block. One publication from the folks at Stampington and Company is the Jewelry Affaire Magazine, one of many craft offerings.  This one has some similarities and differences from the Belle Armoire Jewelry Magazine which I reviewed before.

Like Belle Armoire Jewelry, this quarterly magazine can be bought as an independent issue or you can subscribe to it. It covers a variety of techniques but its strength is the featured mixed media work.  Styles vary too at least for this issue.  Most are bohemian with a few more contemporary styles.

Painted and Stamped Polymer Clay Necklace Project by Toni Pullen
35 projects covers a wide range of materials such as polymer clay, ceramics, wood, wire, concrete, faux fur, leather and suede, textiles, recycled lace,  paper, vintage tins, even recycled xylophone keys!

Recycled Vintage Tin Rings
The techniques used here are less challenging than with the Belle Armoire Jewelry book so it is suitable for all abilities.  Some of the designs are projects with more detailed instructions than the other featured ones. Unlike other jewelry making books, there are no step by step pictures.  Instead the descriptions go over the design process and how the creator made the piece. So be prepared to make a cup of tea or coffee and sit somewhere comfy to read!

Featuring Scrap Leather and Faux Fur
I  enjoyed reading about the designers themselves and how their work evolved. Rima Tessman who made the textile pouch necklace (shown below) was initially inspired by British textile artist, Mandy Patullo. She then challenged herself to make scrap fabric collages, one per week for a year and shared them on Instagram. She then turned these pretty collages into amulet pouch necklaces which are indeed functional and wearable art pieces.

Mosaic Tile Work
Jewelry Affaire also has a section called "In the Jewelry Box" which features several one of a kind creations.  Lots of ideas there!

This publication is great for those who are passionate makers who need a nudge or two in different creative directions. It is a delight for mixed media artists and those who really appreciate handcrafted jewelry.
