Soutache (pronounced - so͞o-tăsh′) is a narrow flat decorative braid. It's been used for trimming clothing and particularly military uniforms for centuries.  But it wasn't used in jewelry until an innovative designer, Dori Csengeri experimented with it in the 1980's. The rest, as they say, is history. The elegant style definitely shouts "statement"!

SoutacheMagic's Soutache and Shibori Ribbon Jewelry, Tutorials and Kits

Soutache jewelry was the brainchild of Dori Csengeri who developed a novel way of using what was once used in military uniforms into beautiful jewelry back in the 1980's.

Since those early days, other designers have used the technique to create their own takes on soutache jewelry. Ukrainian Victoria of SoutacheMagic (no longer available)  often designs hers together with Japanese shibori ribbon. A West meets East collaboration!

These though barely hint on the tremendous talent there.

So feast your eyes on the drop dead gorgeous statement beaded jewelry of 3 Russian designers - Olga Orlova, Lully Snetkova and Kaya Solovieva who together with Tina Galagan form Perlina Rosa.

Inspirational Soutache Jewelry and Tutorials

Sometime ago, I featured some awesome Russian soutache jewelry artisans which wowed many of us.  So if you'd like to see more, the designs by Astrid Art of Poland are just superb.

She is an accomplished artisan who can make all sorts of jewelry including some lovely contemporary style metal work. You can see a lot more of her work on her blog. It's in Polish but a picture, as they say, is worth a thousand words! It is amazing to see how she uses the soutache braid, cabochons and beads in swirling designs.
